Azerbaijan is a former republic of the USSR. It is bound by Iran to the south, Armenia to the west, Georgia to the northwest, Russia to the north and the Caspian Sea to the east. The territory also includes the Nakhichevan Oblast which lies between Iran, Turkey and Armenia. Around 50% of the land area is mountainous.
